CRANBERRY PRODUCERS

Artisans Evelyn and David Ernst are a passionate Canadian couple established on Heckmans Island, near Lunenberg, Nova-Scotia, one of the beautiful Maritime Provinces located on the East coast of Canada.  They founded Terra Beata in 1998, following the purchase of a parcel of land nearby, a peat bog in fact, which they gradually transformed and prepared for the production of cranberries.  Modest at the beginning, they now transform more than 2.3 million kilograms of cranberries per year.

In 2013, Terra Beata received the BRC Certification, which speaks volumes to their dedication to food safety.  Over the years Terra Beata has received numerous awards and kudos for the quality of their products, their expertise and exemplary leadership.

THE BOG

The culture of cranberries requires an acid soil with a pH of 4 to 5, and sphagnum moss.  The fruit contains a small natural air chamber, which allows it to float when it is flooded prior to the harvest, in November.  In the fall the landscape takes on a surreal, flamboyant red tone.  Every September 18th Terra Beata opens its doors for guided tours; in October, you can pick your own cranberries.

Cranberries are a traditional product that every Canadian has grown up with.  In France it is also called by its English name, “cranberry”.  Whatever its name is, this small fruit will seduce you by its unique taste and its therapeutic properties.
